after multiple cassette and 12” releases through kastil’s stale in 2016, it’s time for irazu’s latest addition to the series of complex techno works. “shtamm” is a package that contains four original cuts + a remix by specialist of high-end machine music regis. “refused to be found” is a soaring travel through moods and sonic landscapes which at times resonates like a helicopter flying through an inner city estate building. the aesthetic nature of the opening track is extended through “shtamm”. a multi dimensional piece of work that showcases a more submersive side of irazu s broad pallette. “last hours” is a cinematic stroke of vivid pads that sound like they were extracted from a remastered russian thriller classic. regis opens ups the b-side with a rework of “shtamm”. the off-beat machine funk of the remix leaves little of the original mix intact, yet regis has turned it into a staggering piece of ferocity. “torso” is another irazu original that sound like 7.5 minutes of vigorous rhythms and swerving perc elements.

unearthed by groove archeologist betino errera, this black gem was cut in paris in 1980 by american vocalist robert helms. his french career being rather confidential with releases under his own name as well as bobby helms or simply bobby, the lay down girl album remained a well-kept secret for decades despite the fact that it contained two very strong disco-funk tunes.

while david moufang, also known as move d, certainly needs no introduction, the label polyfon remained a tip for insiders. it might seem like a long shot, but that’s probably what led to the fact that the paths of david moufang and wolfram both – one of the polyfon founders – crossed a few years back. the erfurt located imprint was mostly recognized for its underdog releases from berlin-based tomtomgroove (the funkman), steffen baldo aka ugly drums from cologne (basement amusement park, the next room) and even workshops mastermind lowtec who released his critically acclaimed angstrom ep with the thuringian label.

for the labels ninth release, deep a & biris black crow records revisits one that helped establish the labels direction back in the imprints first year. bcr003, insular realms by fellow israeli producer hakimonu, was praised by many including resident advisor, who said the ep proved his off-kilter take on techno and house is as vibrant and inviting as ever. now in 2017, deepa & biri have invited mind against, luigi tozzi and echologist (aka dub techno veteran brendon moeller) to all rework the original version of insular realms for 2017. first up are life & death’s mind against, with one of the fognini brothers most direct techno productions yet, with a mid-track moment of calm before the intensity resumes. luigi tozzi, the rome-based producer who has had previous outings on dynamic reflection and dino sabatinis outis music, contributes the second remix. taking the lead from the originals more ethereal moments, his version is dreamy & almost wistful as it propels along its shaking rhythm. the b-side offers two takes from brendon moeller in his echologist guise, with a dub mix that twists the original into an acid-inflected track that slowly ratchets up the tension over its seven minutes, while the reshape breaks things down into a churning rhythm peppered with flashes f off kilter sonic details.

toydrum are a duo who sneak into the consciousness. not for them the full frontal assault but, instead, a drip-feed of classy work that many may know without knowing. their hugely acclaimed work with the late singer-songwriter gavin clark lit up shane meadows’ ‘this is england ‘90’, their rework of john lennon’s ‘how do you sleep’ led noel gallagher to have them remix his high flying birds hit ‘in the heat of the moment’ (which, in turn, soundtracked last year’s epic ad for the latest ‘assassin’s creed’ game), and their soundtracks for films such as the recent tye sheridan-starring thriller ‘detour’ and alice lowe’s 2016 venice film festival opener, ‘prevenge’, have broadened their appeal further. toydrum’s signing to skint records is now announced and celebrated by ‘my eye on you (to reinvision)’, a collective interpretation of their work thus far, running the gamut from nick cave’s balladry to trentemøller’s drum & bass-tinted electronica.

repress , from moods & grooves to sistrum, brian harden has served up more than enough soulful, synth-led house and techno in his time. it s just the kind of style that suits the mood on d3, and so the label has picked up his essential -chicago to detroit- jam and called upon a fine selection of remixers to rework the track. first up is byron the aquarius, who drops some expressive broken beat drums into the mix to spar with the illustrious melodic tones to great effect. meanwhile the label boss brian gets busy with a classic, straight-up adaptation on his -chicago sur seine mix- before patrice scott opts for an energised variation with poignant new rhodes-esque keys floating on top.

up next on 20/20 vision we welcome the ever-diverse and evolving nathan jonson. following a decade of producing and dj ing as hrdvsion, nathan has stepped out under his birth name to mark a new stage in his career. cross colours is a perfect representation of this new stage, a hybrid of all the styles he has become renowned for. when we heard cross colours we were all in agreement that luke vibert would be the perfect remixer. luckily luke agreed too and turned in a killer take on the original, flirting with early rave and hardcore whilst keeping the electro aesthetic. the b side is rounded off with a club focused version from ralph lawson & rui-z (which has already being championed by seth troxler on his most recent essential mix) and a dark techno rework from exciting new 20/20 signing dokta, who you can expect to hear a lot more from this year.

apollo are proud to present a stunning new project from nyc / berlin based artists soundwalk collective aka the trio of stephan crasneanscki, simone merli and kamran sadeghi. formed in manhattan to produce concept albums, sound installations and live performances, they create immersive audio excursions from field recordings which they gather from all over the globe - previous works have seen them collaborate with berghain, nan goldin, the films of jean-luc godard and patti smith.

cascades is the music collaboration between two montreal-based musicians, neo-classical pianist jean-michel blais, and genre-defying grammy award-nominated electronic producer mike silver (pka cfcf). building off their sold out performance during the globally-celebrated 2016 red bull music academy, cascades is a stunning 5-song, 30-minute meeting-of-minds that navigates the spaces between the artists’ respective crafts and tendencies toward playful minimalism. featuring new versions from the duo’s catalogues, a reworking of john cage’s “in a landscape”, and a brand new, classical-meets-trance original composition, “hypocrite”, cascades is a celebration of the traditional and experimental, dissolving the old into the new.
